3 min readSleep is among the most universal and yet least understood behaviors in the animal kingdom. All mammals sleep, and disruption of sleep leads to profound cognitive and physiological impairments. But why? This article reviews the principal theories of sleep function from a neuroscientific perspective, including the consolidation of memory, the restoration of metabolic and cellular resources, the regulation of synaptic homeostasis, and the dress-rehearsal theory of dream function. We examine evidence from lesion studies, sleep deprivation experiments, and electrophysiological recordings during sleep to evaluate each hypothesis. The dress-rehearsal theory — that sleep and dreaming serve to simulate waking scenarios and rehearse behavioral repertoires — is presented as a novel and synthesizing framework consistent with the available evidence.
Shakespeare's Hamlet asked to "die, to sleep — perchance to dream." Modern neuroscience asks a more prosaic but equally profound question: what is sleep for? Despite consuming roughly a third of human life, the function of sleep remains one of the most contested questions in biology.
This review surveys the landscape of sleep theories and introduces the dress-rehearsal hypothesis: that dream sleep functions as a cognitive simulator, allowing the brain to practice and optimize behavioral responses to anticipated scenarios without real-world consequences.
