Abstract

A narrative poem reflecting on the tumultuous events, social challenges, and global upheaval that defined the year 2020.

Twenty twenty Gave us plenty To talk about To scream and shout

Like none before And none since then That’s why hindsight Is twenty twenty.

The virus raged We lost the aged We quarantined We closed canteens.

We met Wuhan It was no fun You ask who won? No one, no one.

Except for Zoom Made a big boom Its stock went up No one hooked up.

We worked from home kids photobombed we wore no pants there were no gants.

We missed the Sun Our plans undone lived in darkness stood for blackness.

Fired employees Saw oil flow free. As cars were parked And none embarked.

Beneath a knee Floyd said his plea Said I can’t breathe Left us bereaved.

Black people rose Tired of cop blows Tanks roamed the streets. Got no retreats.

Borders were closed. Protests were hosed Curfews declared But no one cared.

Tears were shed For photo opp Bible unread Was quite a flop.

That year the cops Let loot the shops Instead they stopped Protesters, lopped.

Made history Saw misery Dismantled cops For their bad stops.

We hoarded paper We took the streets We took a knee We lost our labor.

A TV star Declared war We borrowed Prez From previous terms.

The small blue bird Fact checked a tweet To stop deceit On voter fraud.

From the White House To Downing Street Hairdos quite neat Got no applause.

To make us all
