Abstract

This article explores the theory that the literary characters Sam Weller and Samwise Gamgee were inspired by Don Quixote's squire, Sancho Panza, drawing parallels in their physical traits, supportive nature, and common naming convention.

It's clear to me that both Sam Weller and Samwise Gamgee were clearly inspired by Sancho Panza. They're chubby, good-natured and blindingly supportive of their companion hero. The fact that they are both named Sam, perhaps the closest English name to Sancho, is surely no coincidence. Anybody want to weigh in? Has anybody asked the authors?
