The machines won't take over the world just yet

Abstract

A brief reflection on the limitations of current technology, highlighting a nonsensical flight itinerary suggested by United Airlines as proof that software algorithms still lack basic common sense.

...as long as machines continue to make suggestions like this one, lacking any common sense:

for those of you who don't know the airports, United suggested I fly from the SF Bay area to Los Angeles, back from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, and from there back to the Greater Los Angeles. And this was the one-way leg of the trip!

Credits: United Airlines for the superb algorithms, title from a comment by David Rosenthal.
