Why the feeling grows the more it's felt — and what that means for how love begins, deepens, and ends.

Engineers fear positive feedback loops. In electronics, they cause oscillation and instability. In ecology, they can trigger population explosions or collapses. In finance, they create bubbles. A system with positive feedback, left unchecked, tends toward extremes.
Love is a positive feedback loop. And that explains nearly everything about it — why it grows so fast, why it can become consuming, why it hurts so much when it stops.
The basic mechanism is simple. You spend time with someone. You enjoy it. Because you enjoyed it, you want more. More contact produces more enjoyment, which produces more desire for contact. The loop tightens. Over weeks or months, what began as mild interest can become something that reorganizes your priorities, your schedule, your sense of self.
This is not metaphor. At the neurochemical level, oxytocin — the "bonding hormone" — is released during positive social contact and primes the brain for more contact. Dopamine, released during rewarding experiences, encodes the other person as a source of reward, making thoughts of them intrinsically pleasurable. The brain begins to predict reward from the person's presence, which drives approach behavior, which generates more reward.
One implication is that love is, in a sense, self-fulfilling. The more you act as though you love someone — the more you invest attention, time, and care — the more you actually come to love them. This is not cynical. It is hopeful. It means that love is not purely a passive feeling that either exists or doesn't; it is a dynamic that can be cultivated.
Another implication: love does not start from a single overwhelming moment. It starts from a small perturbation — a conversation, a glance, a small kindness — that initiates the feedback loop. Whether the loop grows or damps out depends on what happens next. In this sense, love is less like being struck by lightning and more like being very slightly tipped off balance — and then falling, gradually, and then all at once.
Positive feedback loops don't run forever. They are bounded by constraints — time, energy, opportunity, competing loops. When the inputs to the loop are cut off — when contact stops, when the relationship ends — the loop does not merely pause. The brain, primed for reward, encounters its absence. That is grief: the positive feedback system running without its input, generating craving rather than satisfaction.
This is why ending a relationship — even a bad one — is painful. The loop wants to close. It takes time for the brain to recalibrate, to lower its prediction of reward from the absent person, to re-route its feedback circuits elsewhere.
But loops can be redirected. The same capacity for deep attachment that makes love painful also makes it renewable. The system that loved once can love again.
